Russell M. Bauer, Ph.D., a professor and director for clinical training in the department of clinical and health psychology, has been elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Council of University Directors of Clinical Psychology. The organization comprises 157 programs that follow the scientist-practitioner model of education and training in clinical psychology.
Dawn Bowers, Ph.D., a professor in the department of clinical and health psychology, received the 2016 UF Doctoral Mentoring Award for excellence, innovation and effectiveness in mentoring doctoral students. In addition, she was appointed chair of the American Psychological Association’s Division 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology) Fellows Committee.
David Fuller, Ph.D., a professor in the department of physical therapy and director of the rehabilitation science doctoral program, was named a University of Florida Research Foundation Professor for 2016-2019. The recognition goes to faculty who have a distinguished current record of research and a strong research agenda that is likely to lead to continuing distinction in their fields.
A study co-authored by Cynthia Johnson, Ph.D., an associate professor in the department of clinical and health psychology and a member of the Anita Zucker Center for Excellence in Early Childhood Studies, has been recognized as one of the top breakthroughs in autism research by the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, a federal advisory committee charged with coordinating all activities related to autism spectrum disorder within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Peter Lang, Ph.D., a graduate research professor in the department of clinical and health psychology and director of the Center for the Study of Emotion & Attention, received the International Union of Psychological Science’s Lifetime Career Award. The award honors distinguished and enduring lifetime contributions to international cooperation and advancement of knowledge in the field of psychological science. He was recognized at the organization’s International Congress of Psychology meeting held in Yokohama, Japan.
A research program founded by Arch G. Mainous III, Ph.D., chair of the department of health services research, management and policy, received the Innovative Program Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine at the society’s annual meeting. The Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance was recognized for having a substantial impact on scholarly activity within the discipline of family medicine.
William McGehee, Ph.D., P.T., a clinical assistant professor in the department of physical therapy and director of physical therapy education, received the American Physical Therapy Association’s 2016 Lucy Blair Service Award for exception contributions to the association.
Yan Wang, Ph.D., a research assistant scientist in the department of epidemiology at PHHP and the College of Medicine, has received the Matilda White Riley Early Stage Investigator Honor from the National Institutes of Health Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research. The award recognizes Wang’s article on a study that assessed social capital and health risk behaviors using a large random sample of Chinese residents in Wuhan, China.
Students
Katie Butera, a doctoral student in rehabilitation science, received a Promotion of Doctoral Studies, or PODS, I Scholarship from the Foundation for Physical Therapy and supported by the Neurology Section Endowment Fund.
Trevor Lentz, a doctoral student in rehabilitation science, received a Promotion of Doctoral Studies, or PODS, II Scholarship from the Foundation for Physical Therapy. The award is given in honor of Viva J. Erickson, P.T., and recognizes outstanding academic and leadership achievement.
Jacqueline Maye, a doctoral student in clinical psychology, has received a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institute on Aging. The award will support her dissertation research on the effects of mindfulness meditation on attentional control in older adults. She was also selected as a 2016 Research Fellow by the Mind and Life Summer Research Institute.
Vicki Osborne, a doctoral student in the department of epidemiology in PHHP and the College of Medicine, was named one of the best reviewers for Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety, the official journal for the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology. She has been reviewing articles for the journal since 2011.
Danielle Scheer, a doctoral student in health services research, received the 3rd Annual Rene Jahiel Award for Best Poster in Disability Research from the Disability Research Interest Group at AcademyHealth’s Annual Research Meeting in Boston. Her research discussed the creation of a training program for professionals and its reception by providers.
Sarah Szymkowicz, a doctoral student in clinical psychology, is one of two neuropsychology graduate students nationwide to receive a 2016 Benton-Meier Scholarship from the American Psychological Foundation. The scholarship will support Szymkowicz’s dissertation project, “Age-Related Mechanisms of Emotion Anticipation and Perception.”
Nicole Tester, a master’s student in occupational therapy, received a scholarship from the American Occupational Therapy Foundation, sponsored by OccupationalTherapy.com. The award recognizes her academic achievements and promise as an occupational therapist.
Marissa Valentine, a doctoral student in One Health in the department of environmental and global health, has been awarded a TL1 training grant from UF’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute. As a TL1 trainee, she receives one year of funding that includes a travel allowance to attend and present her research at the annual Translational Science conference.
Ivana Vaughn, a doctoral student in health services research, received the Leighton E. Cluff Award for Aging Research for her research on models of care coordination and patient satisfaction among older adults.
Xinrui Zhang, a doctoral student in the department of biostatistics in PHHP and the College of Medicine, received the Jiann-Ping Hsu Pharmaceutical and Regulatory Sciences Student Paper Award at the 2016 Applied Statistics Symposium of the International Chinese Statistical Association held in Atlanta.
